I am someone who doesn't have every tomb raider game, so this is not coming from an avid gamer, but this version of the game really does strike as an 'after thought', there are no boss battles, no obstacles (eg spears thrusting from the walls to dodge), no timed puzzles, and no slow motion sequences that require certain buttons to be pressed at the right moment, (i can't remember what these are called but I'm sure that most ganers know what I mean).
Basically, the gane is just an extremely shirt sequence of climbing (that is so easy a 4 year old could do it) and puzzles that are so easy that they don't earn the title of 'puzzles' and the whole story from Legend where Lara is told by Amanda that her Mother is in Avalon is totally forgotten and although that is the main theme from Legend, it is barely touched in Underworld and how the story went from King Arthur to Thor I have no idea.
The game is shorter than Legend, which I thought was too short, and the graphic are pretty poor. They are certainly a down-grade from Legend and Underworld, and although you get use to it, there are some really dodgy camera angles. There is also alot of time wasted with waiting for doors to open which takes about 30 seconds, and about a third of the gamneplay is on a motorbike which is hard to control because of the graphics, and it really smacks as a device for wasting time to make the game seem longer. There are also parts that I am convinced are timed in the ps3 version, though I can't say for sure because I don't have that version.
It did keep me occupied for a couple of days, but I was far from satisfied when I had completed it. I really think that the Tomb Raider franchise is dying, if not totally dead. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 18 JULY 2010 |
| | | | | | WORST TOMBRAIDER OF ALL TIME - Scores 1/5
Having played all the Tombraider games I was forced to buy the PS2 game as like a whole load of other people my pc wasn't high enough spec although it manages to play every other game I've bought!!. If you are in the same position DON'T BOTHER it's the worst game I've ever played. It's pretty hard controlling Lara, the camera angle has a mind of its own and the game is extremely short. Why they released this on PS2 is beyond belief as apparently all the other versions are much longer, it's completely turned me off of buying any more of the Tombraider/Lara Croft series, I'll save my money in future!! | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 17 APRIL 2010 |

| | | | | | ENJOYABLE IF YOU HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR - Scores 5/5
This is a good Tomb Raider adventure that returns to the roots of the original by having Lara explore the tombs, caves and forests in solitude, which is quite a relaxing experience. Encounters with animals and humans is rare so you don't have to worry too much about shooting stuff and losing health. Some of the puzzles are cool and require some thought just like what made the older games so great.
The amount of bad reviews the game has gotten here isn't very surprising, as this PS2 version is kind of like the red-headed stepchild version as it obviously hasnt been given much attention. There are alot of glitches and strange happenings which might irritate some people, but I see it more like watching a bad B-Movie and laughing at the mistakes and poor quality of the film. Like for example, there is a part near the beginning of the game where you encounter the Kraken (large octopus creature) and in this version, it does not move, it just sits there, stagnant. If you swim up to it and touch it then you just suddenly die. Probably the laziest programming i've seen in a game, but still I couldn't help but laugh. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 08 FEBRUARY 2010 |
| | | | | | UNDIGNIFIED END TO THE PS2 ADVENTURE - Scores 1/5
Quite simply, this game is ready to be taken into the darkest depths of the woods with a loaded shotgun and a shovel. What is most upsetting to fan of the Tomb Raider series is that this game seems to be punishment for not yet wanting to fork out several hundred pounds for a PS3, sadly though EIDOS, some of us still have rent, tax and fuel to pay for...
The graphics are, in solitude, delicious, but the problem comes as soon as you begin to move, whereby the frame rate becomes jerkier than an assymetrically and triangular wheeled wagon. The control system is also a nightmare, quite often moving the joypad left will result in Lara moving in any number of directions other than the one requested. The FMV sequences are clearly bodged rather than using the in game graphics for PS2, as would have been the case on Anniversary or Legend. Collision detection too is vile, with Lara able to bounce of of thin air at a distance of about a relative metre from the actual obstacle.
If you're thinking of buying this game, you're probably doing it for the same reason as I did, because you had played through the previous games in the series and wanted to follow the story through to its conclusion, but really I would suggest you wait until those of us with real-world commitments can afford to buy a PS3. I decided to carry on regardless for the sake of the story but eventually got fed up when the game kept crashing.
Extremely angry with the state of this game, especially after enjoying the previous two titles. | REVIEW BY ANONYMOUS ON 10 JANUARY 2010 |
